Lady Barons reach 30-win mark, take GACC leader the distance
MOUNT VERNON -- The Brewton-Parker College softball team scored a Georgia-Alabama-Conference doubleheader sweep Friday and the Lady Barons nearly pulled off a big upset Saturday before they were swept by the GACC leader.
On Friday, Brewton-Parker took 9-0 and 6-2 victories over Southern Wesleyan University in Central, S.C., but on Saturday was dealt 9-0 and 5-4 to North Georgia College and State University.
The Lady Barons (31-12 overall, 7-9 GACC) reached the 30-win mark Friday behind a one-hit shutout by senior right-hander Lyndsay Gomme (10-4), and junior right-hander Kelly Hamilton rode a six-run first inning of offensive support to victory in the second game.
"We played well all-around," said Brewton-Parker coach Jason Bryant, noting senior Kendra Sewell's two doubles in the twin bill.
The Lady Barons were in position in Saturday's second game to hand North Georgia its first conference loss, holding a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning before the Lady Saints (37-5 overall) rallied to force extra innings.
Brewton-Parker took a 4-3 lead in the 10th after the international rule was implemented with a runner beginning the inning on second base, but North Georgia tied the score again and then won the game in the 11th on a two-out base hit off Hamilton (12-6).
The NAIA No. 14 ranked Lady Saints (37-5 overall) improved to 10-0 in conference play with the sweep, which they began with a shutout win in the opener, but Bryant said the close loss in the nightcap was enough to give the Lady Barons some confidence as they prepare for the GACC postseason tournament April 24-26 in Montgomery, Ala.
"It is going to be an interesting tournament," Bryant said. "North Georgia is head and shoulders above the rest of us, who are all pretty even, but we could steal a game from them. We are playing our best ball right now."
Brewton-Parker began the week with three doubleheaders to play in five days, starting with Tuesday's visit to Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus.
Brewton-Parker plays host to non-conference foe Wesleyan College at 3p.m. Thursday and finishes the regular season with a make-up twin bill against Faulkner University (Ala.) on Saturday at 3 p.m. That date was postponed from April 8.
