Awards presented during Honors Day ceremony

Awards were presented to students in 26 categories, with two faculty members and one division also honored during the Honors Day ceremony April 22 in Saliba Chapel on the campus in Mount Vernon. Dr. Ron Melton, provost at Brewton-Parker, presided over the ceremony.

Melton recognized Krista Boyd, a senior from Moultrie, and Matthew Herndon, a senior from Adrian, as recipients of the Conrad-Shelby Award from as two of five graduating seniors with the highest scholastic average during six or more semesters at Brewton-Parker. Three other recipients were recognized but were unable to attend the ceremony: Jeffrey Conkin, Woodbine senior; Rasa Herman, Hazlehurst senior; and Marshia Pierce, Vidalia senior.

Melton also recognized the students named Dean's Scholars, after making the Dean's List at least five times out of the last seven semesters. In the presentation of the individual division awards:

Joshua Stuart, a senior from Ashland City, Tenn., received the Athletic Award for Highest Academic Achievement from Steve Barker, athletic director and men's basketball coach, and Dr. David Smith, Brewton-Parker's president.

Matthew Herndon, a senior from Adrian, received the Business Award from Dr. Dewel Lawrence, chair of the business division and professor of business.

Kimberly Nobles, a senior from Dublin, received the Accounting Award by the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants from Dr. Dewel Lawrence, chair of the business division and professor of business.

Chris Summerlin, a senior from Griffin, received the Communications Award from Dr. Don Wallace, professor of communication.

Mark Stokes, a senior from Ludowici, received the Drama Award from Sheryl Threlkeld, assistant professor of communication.

Machandra (Nicky) Peaden Stokes, a senior from Ludowici, received the Sigma Tau Delta English Language Award from Dr. Ruth Ellen Porter, the Grace Lorentzson Hyatt professor of English and languages and the chair of the humanities division.

Lynn Addison, a senior from Vidalia, received the Foreign Language Award from Sherry LeCompte, assistant professor of French and Spanish.

Kelly Redlich, a senior from Peachtree City, received the History Award from Dr. Kevin McRainie, assistant professor of history.

Doug Logan, a senior from Moultrie, received the History Award from Dr. Kevin McRainie, assistant professor of history. Logan also was recognized by Michael Aoa, director of student activities, as the recipient of the Yearbook Award.

Alissa Vogt, a senior at Brewton-Parker College from Kelowna, British Columbia, received the International Student Award from Dr. Mariam George, professor of biology.

Alston Carter, a junior from Grovetown, received the award for Leadership in Student Affairs from Michael Aoa, director of student activities.

Joy Ducree-Evans, a senior from Dublin, received the award for Leadership in Student Service to the College from Sherrie Helms, dean of students. Ducree-Evans also received the Religious Leadership Award from Dr. Jerry Ray, associate professor of Christianity at Brewton-Parker.

Charlene Wiggins, a senior from Vidalia, received the Music Award from Dr. Glenn Eernisse, assistant professor of instrumental activities and interim dean of the music division.

Shane Griffin, a senior from Tarrytown, received the Math Award from Dr. Marvin McClendon, assistant professor of mathematics.

James Morrison Jr., a senior through the college's external center in Savannah, was announced as the recipient of the Outstanding External Programs Student Award. Morrison was recognized by Dr. William Denni, dean of external programs, and will receive his award during the commencement exercises for external students May 10 in Savannah.

Rasa Herman, a senior from Hazlehurst, was announced as the recipient of the Outstanding Future Teacher Award by Dr. Laurie Jossey, chair of the education division.

Angela Yarber, a senior from Woodstock, received the award as the Outstanding Bachelor of Ministry/Christianity Student from Dr. Doug Weaver, the Barney Averitt professor of Christianity.

Deondrick Clemons, a senior from Rhine, received the Political Science Award from Dr. Sid Johnson, professor of political science and vice president emeritus.

Katie Lowry, a senior from Lawrenceville, received the Psychology Award from Dr. Bill Faw, associate professor of psychology and chair of the social and behavioral sciences division.

Courtney Thompson, a junior from Tifton, received the Religious Service Award from Dr. Jerry Ray, associate professor of Christianity.

Monica Miller, a sophomore from Lyons, received the Richard B. Russell Award by the General Richard Montgomery chapter of Daughter of the American Colonists from Dr. Larry Toll, associate professor of history.

Jennifer Cox, a senior from Warner Robins, received the Science Award from Dr. David McMillin, professor of biology and chair of the math and natural sciences division.

Brandi Horton, a senior from Ailey, received the Sociology Award from Dr. C.A. George, professor of sociology.

Dr. Pierce Dickens of Statesboro, an assistant professor of music at Brewton-Parker, received the award as the Outstanding Teacher for 2002-03 from Josh Hartley, a junior from Sandersville and newly elected Student Government Association president.

Dr. Bill Faw, associate professor of psychology and chair of the social and behavioral sciences division at Brewton-Parker, received the award on behalf of the social and behavioral sciences division as the Outstanding College Division for 2002-03 from Josh Hartley, a junior from Sandersville and newly elected Student Government Association president.

Dr. Mariam George, a professor of biology at Brewton-Parker, received the Jordan Teaching Excellence Award from Dr. Ron Melton, provost.
