Lady Barons face on-court tests this weekend
MOUNT VERNON -- A potent schedule awaits the Brewton-Parker College volleyball
team this weekend in the Mid-Season Classic in Montgomery, Ala., which features
matches for the Lady Barons against two of the top three teams in NAIA Region
XIII.
The Lady Barons enter the Mid-Season Classic, which pits teams from the
Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference in three matches against squads from the
Gulf Coast Athletic Conference at Faulkner University, with an 18-8 overall
record and 4-3 in GACC play.
On Friday, Brewton-Parker will play region No. 2 Spring Hill College (Ala.) and
No. 3 Dillard University (La.), the latter which took three straight games from
the Lady Barons in LaGrange College's tournament Sept. 27.
Belhaven College (Miss.) will be Brewton-Parker's final opponent on Saturday.
Lady Barons coach Jason Bryant hopes his team can alleviate some of the 25
errors that proved costly in their last on-court match, a 3-1 loss to GACC
leader Georgia Southwestern State University on Oct. 14 in the Student
Activities Center.
"We didn't play badly, but we just had too many errors," Bryant said of the
match, in which the Lady Barons' eight-match streak was snapped. "We lost those
three games by two, two and three points, and I told the girls that is the best
team in the conference, so it is just a matter of getting it done and correcting
those errors."
Latika Thomas, a junior outside hitter from Gainesville, Fla., fueled the Lady
Barons' offensive attack with 19 kills, while senior setter Jeni Paul of
Woodstock had 43 assists along with 10 kills. Junior middle hitter KC Cheshire
of Marietta added 10 kills.
The Lady Barons picked up a forfeit victory over Claflin University (S.C.),
which canceled Saturday's match at the Student Activities Center.
After the Mid-Season Classic, the Lady Barons will travel to Orangeburg, S.C.,
to face Claflin on Tuesday, Oct. 28, and then return to GACC action with a 6:30
p.m. match Oct. 30 against Faulkner at the Student Activities Center.
