Lady Barons win 8th straight match
MOUNT VERNON -- For the Brewton-Parker College volleyball team to follow a
31-win season from 2002 is a chore, but the Lady Barons are giving it their best
effort and have even exceeded their predecessors in one category.
The Lady Barons won their eighth straight match on Oct. 7, a 3-0 conference win
at Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga., that gave Brewton-Parker a 4-2 record
in Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference play to surpass last season's GACC win
total.
The Lady Barons had lost just one game in the seven most recent matches through
the win, which win also gave Brewton-Parker its 14th victory by sweep.
"That was a match against a conference rival that we had to win," said Lady
Barons coach Jason Bryant, whose team was 17-7 overall after the triumph.
Junior middle hitter KC Cheshire of Marietta and junior outside hitter Latika
Thomas of Gainesville, Fla., each had 13 kills in the match.
On the heels of being named GACC Setter of the Week for Sept. 28-Oct. 4, senior
setter Jeni Paul of Woodstock had a big night with 30 assists.
Among others' contributions, Bryant also mentioned strong back-row play by
senior defensive specialist Nicole Behning of Jacksonville, Fla., and freshman
outside hitter Debbie Sooter of Meridian, Idaho.
"Everybody is playing well and together," Bryant said. "Everybody seems to be on
the same page. We've come through a lot of adversity and we have done it
together. It is a pleasure to coach this bunch."
This week's action began with a GACC match Tuesday at home against Georgia
Southwestern State University and continues Saturday when the Lady Barons play
host to Claflin University (S.C.) in a nonconference match at 2 p.m. in the
Student Activities Center.
