Award-winning poet to present works at BPC
on Nov. 17
MOUNT VERNON --
Award-winning poet Bob Hicok will read at Brewton Parker College in the gallery
of the Fountain-New Library on Monday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. as part of this year's
Georgia Poetry Circuit.
Hicok is the author of The Legend of Light, Plus Shipping and Animal Soul.
Winner of a National Education Association Fellowship and two Pushcart Prizes,
he has published poems in The New Yorker, American Poetry Review, Poetry and
Ploughshares, and his poems have appeared in two issues of Best American Poetry.
The Legend of Light was an American Library Association Booklist Notable Book of
the Year.
"We continue our series this year with another of America's outstanding voices
in poetry," said William Teem, associate professor of English at Brewton-Parker.
"Hicok writes poems that reach out to a wide audience."
Hicok comes to poetry from a very blue-collar background. By profession he is an
independent die designer, mostly for the manufacture of auto parts.
Hicok would work on his poems early in the morning before he submitted to the
demands of making a living, and he would spend his evenings getting the work
out, looking for an audience.
The creative writing program at Brewton-Parker College invites everyone to come
for this event. Inquiries may be directed to Teem at 583-3104.
