Barons too much for Morris, get first win on road
After watching his Brewton-Parker College men's basketball team lose two games
to Morris College last year, Barons coach Steve Barker was apprehensive going up
to Sumter, S.C., on Tuesday, Nov. 11 to play the Hornets in their own nest.
"I was worried," Barker said. "Morris College was coming off an impressive road
win against Emmanuel (a Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference rival of
Brewton-Parker's)."
Barker's concerns proved to be unfounded as the Barons got off to a quick start
against the Hornets and cruised to an 84-66 victory. Brewton-Parker (1-2)
continued its dominance throughout the second half following a 45-28 halftime
advantage.
Junior guard Tre Hill of Waycross was the leading scorer for the Barons with 33
points. Hill was 7 of 7 on field-goal tries and 18 of 19 from the line. "It was
a career best for Tre," Barker said.
Also stepping up big for the Barons was senior post Hector Solano of Miami,
Fla., who scored 16 points and had a team-high 11 rebounds after sitting out the
Barons' first two games - both 3-point losses in the Brewton-Parker Tip-Off
Classic.
"The keys for us were defense and rebounding," said Barker. "We out-rebounded
them 47 to 46." Barker added that senior guard Jarvis Smith of Atlanta and
junior post Bryan Jett of Hampton were standouts on defense.
Darren Greene was the leading scorer for Morris College with 22.
"Morris has a good team but Tre and Hector just made all the difference in the
game," Barker said. "It was great having Hector back."
The Barons will be back home Tuesday, Nov. 18, against Allen University (S.C.).
Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
