MOUNT VERNON -- One way to beat a full-court press is to practice against it,
and that's what the Brewton-Parker College men's basketball team did leading up
to its 74-52 non-conference victory over Allen University (S.C.) at the Student
Activities Center on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
"We knew that they would be very athletic, would press us full court
man-to-man," Barons head coach Steve Barker said. "So, we worked on that in
practice."
If the visiting Yellow Jackets hoped to unsettle the Barons with their press,
Barker's remedy prevented those plans. "We handled their pressure and shot 53
percent," he said, adding, "We limited them to 18 field goals for the whole
night."
Brewton-Parker also out-rebounded Allen 35-31.
In posting their second straight win, the Barons (2-2) were led by junior post
Bryan Jett of Hampton with 17 points and 10 rebounds, his second double-double
in three games.
Senior post Hector Solano of Miami, Fla., followed with 14 points and five
rebounds, and junior guard Tre Hill of Waycross added 13 points and six
rebounds.
The Barons went out to a 31-23 lead in the first half and fended off the best
efforts of Allen's Mike Rodgers, who had 20 points and six rebounds in leading
the Yellow Jackets.
"The key is that we defended them and guarded them," Barker said. "Tre Hill in
particular did a great job containing their point guard."
The one area where Barker said the Barons needed some work was at the free-throw
line, where they were a scant 21-for-41. "That has to improve," said Barker,
whose team meets Allen again Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Columbia, S.C.
Brewton-Parker's following action involves another trip to South Carolina, to
Voorhees College in Denmark for an 8 p.m. game Tuesday, Dec. 1.
