Six Lady Barons receive GACC volleyball
MOUNT VERNON -- Four Brewton-Parker College volleyball players Lady Barons received Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference player honors and two were selections to the GACC's All-Academic Team.
Two of Brewton-Parker's three selections to the All-Conference Team are repeat honorees, while the third was chosen in her first year on the team.
Jeni Paul, a 5-foot-9 senior from Woodstock, is a three-time selection and KC Cheshire, a 6-foot junior from Marietta, is a repeat pick. Latika Thomas, a 5-9 junior from Gainesville, Fla., is a transfer from St. Johns River Community College in Palatka, Fla.
Shanti Cortese, a 5-9 junior from Tarpon Springs, Fla., made the All-Newcomer Team after she also transferred from St. Johns River.
The Lady Barons' two members of the All-Academic Team are repeat qualifiers Jaime Murrant and Amanda San U.
In GACC statistics entering the conference tournament, which was Nov. 13-15 at Brewton-Parker's Student Activities Center, Paul was tied for third in assists with 882 and the second-leading average among leaders with 8.65 per game. Paul also was tied for eighth in service aces with 45 (0.44 per game).
Cheshire led the conference in hitting percentage, a category led by the Lady Barons in the team rankings, with Thomas and Cortese respectively fourth and fifth.
Thomas was ranked No. 2 in kills with 415, with her average of 4.03 the best among the GACC leaders. Cheshire was No. 7 in kills with 304 and No.6 in services aces with 46 (0.45 average).
Paul also was selected as the GACC Setter of the Week three times during the 2003 season, including the last two weeks of the regular season.
Thomas received conference Player of the Week honors for the weeks ending Sept. 27 and Nov. 8, Cheshire received the Player of the Week honor for Nov. 1 and Cortese was the winner for the week ending Sept. 20.
Murrant, a 5-9 senior outside/middle hitter from Kelowna, British Columbia, is a third-time Al-Academic selection with a 3.44 grade point average. San U, a 5-6 junior defensive specialist from Watkinsville, is a repeat All-Academic qualifier with a 3.49 GPA.
