MOUNT VERNON— State Representative, Matt Hatchett, spoke Wednesday evening to students and faculty in Gilder auditorium for Constitution Day 2016. Hatchett opened his talk by briefly speaking on the importance of the Constitution. He pointed out the value the amendments added to the Constitution in a country where people are “continually debating, refining, and perfecting [their] government.” Next, Hatchett opened the floor for questions from the audience. The audience asked a wide variety of questions; from questions about his opinion on current events to what role he played in making changes in the government. A key point that Hatchett emphasized was the power young adults in the United States hold and how important it is for them to vote. “One of the most disappointing things is the apathy from our people about voting. Vote because your future depends on it,” he urged. When speaking about the upcoming Presidential election, Hatchett said “The reason you have such a strange, unique election is because so many people are not happy with the way things are in this country.” He explained that many people were voting that had never voted before, leading to some major changes in this country. “History is being made as we speak,” Hatchett concluded.
