MOUNT VERNON— November 3-5, 2016, Brewton-Parker College Assistant Professor of History, Dr. Amanda Allen, presented at the annual Southern Conference on British Studies (SCBS) in St. Pete Beach, Florida. The SCBS holds its conference in conjunction with the Southern Historical Association’s annual conference, attended this year by retired BPC History Professor Dr. Ronald Melton. Allen’s paper, “Beware the Female: the Negative Female Portrayal in William Baldwin’s Beware the Cat and its Reformation Context,” was a historical analysis of England’s first novel. In her paper, Allen argues the three fictional female characters were negative representations of Queen Mary I. As a piece of Reformation Propaganda, the novel served to criticize Mary’s persecution of Protestants and, more broadly, female leadership in the Sixteenth Century.
Professional Conferences afford college and university professors the opportunity to stay current with new scholarship trends. New historical trends and themes, presented at these conferences, will be incorporated into BPC’s current history offerings. The BPC Department of History is proud to be providing our students and our region the same current, strong scholarship available to other students across the country.
