MOUNT VERNON— Since the fall semester of 2016, the physical science laboratory and classroom space at Brewton-Parker College have undergone a major transformation and face-lift. Dr. Sampyo, Hong, associate professor of Physical Science, worked tirelessly to reorganize, clean, and spruce up the physical science facilities. Towards the end of the fall semester, the Division of Math and Natural Sciences invested a large amount from their annual lab supply budget to purchase new lab equipment from Vernier Software and Technology. The money comes from lab fees paid by students enrolled in laboratory courses thus student contributions have made this improvement possible. The equipment is used by General Physics I & II students, Physics of Music students, as well as students in the Introduction to the Physical Sciences course. Hong also teaches astronomy as an evening class during fall semesters, and he uses a number of telescopes either generously donated to Brewton-Parker in the past or acquired using laboratory fees. “Gazing at the stars and planets sounds like a wonderful course to take as a science elective!” stated Dr. Helene Peters, chair of the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and associate professor of biology. “This improvement guarantees that students at Brewton-Parker will receive excellent laboratory instruction in the physical sciences for many years to come.”
