MOUNT VERNON— Brewton-Parker’s Cultural Diversity Committee hosted A Journey, a one-woman play by Kimberly Wilson, Tuesday, February 21, 2017. Wilson’s play took the audience on a “journey” of influential African American women through her use of song and dialogue. Although just one woman performed, Wilson was able to effectively become multiple characters such as an African queen, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelo, and more. Using her talents in song to seamlessly transition from character to character, Wilson portrayed the struggles and triumphs African American women throughout history have faced. Dr. Steve Echols, President of Brewton-Parker College, said that the performance left him “disturbed, convicted, and hopeful.”
At the conclusion of the performance, Wilson gave a brief autobiography in which she explained her purpose for creating A Journey. “I wanted to tell a story where I could reach the average person,” she explained. Wilson urged the audience to write about their own “journey” because everyone has a story to tell.
