MOUNT VERNON— Some months ago Mr. Daryl Fletcher, Director of Library Services, and Dr. Beverly Robinson, Associate Provost for Student Engagement & Success, collaborated in submitting a grant application to the Georgia Humanities Council to host the “Golden Era of Gospel Music” exhibit through the month of August. The Library received notification on Wednesday, June 14th, that Brewton-Parker had been awarded the grant in the amount of $2,000.
The exhibit has never toured in the State of Georgia. Through photography, texts, and music, the exhibit describes the importance of gospel music in African American communities in the United States and traces the evolution of gospel music. The exhibit will also display an 80×60 Gospel Quilt which depicts when gospel musicians and singers were not allowed to stay in hotels and had to stay in local homes. The collection includes photos and billboards representing the North, East, West, and South. The first letter of each direction is a part of the spelling of the word NEWS, as gospel is often referred to as “Good News.” The exhibit currently is housed in the State of Florida but has toured throughout the United States.
Several activities are scheduled, including a gospel music workshop and gospel music concert, an opening reception to include a panel discussion by the owners of the exhibit and ongoing activities throughout the month of August.
