The relationship between Brewton-Parker College and the local community is undeniable and is reflected by the building names around campus. These names are now joined by the Lena M. Thigpen court. The court, housed within Gillis Gymnasium, is named in honor of Paul Thigpen’s, the owner of Paul Thigpen Chevrolet, mother.
Lena M. Thigpen, a resident of Mount Vernon, GA, attended Brewton-Parker College after the passing of her husband. She worked full-time while attending classes. Thigpen graduated in 1990, which made her one of the first graduates to receive a four-year degree.
Paul Thigpen Chevrolet, a corporate sponsor of Brewton-Parker College, recently contributed the funds necessary for the full renovation of the Gillis Gymnasium basketball courts. Paul Thigpen commented on his joy at being able to “honor my mother’s name and support her alma mater.”
The Lena M. Thigpen Court was dedicated on September 7, 2017 during the first match played on the refurnished court, which was the Brewton-Parker College first home volleyball game of the season against Truett McConnell University’s Bears. Dr. Steve Echols, President of Brewton-Parker College, opened the dedication ceremony.
In his speech, Echols stated, “Brewton-Parker notes and is very appreciative of the donations made by Paul Thigpen Chevrolet. Because of corporate sponsors like Paul Thigpen Chevrolet we are able to further develop our campus and impact the lives of students even more.” He later prayed over the Lena M. Thigpen Court and the many student-athletes who will play on it.
The Barons would ultimately contribute to the special night by winning the first game played on the newly dedicated court in the fifth set against the Bears.
