Visitors to Brewton-Parker College’s Historic Village caught a glimpse of life in days past on Saturday, September 30. Open in conjunction with Mount Vernon’s annual Hog Wild Festival, the village offered a learning experience and fun activities for all ages.
The Cooper-Conner and Berry-Thompson houses were the main focal points of the Historic Village. Visitors had the opportunity to take a tour of both houses while learning about their separate histories. Women dressed in apparel from the era explained how life took place in the homes before electricity. They explained things like the process of baking over a fire to washing clothes by hand in a bucket.
The Historic Village tour offered several hands-on activities. Visitors tried milking goats and shucking corn. They also sampled freshly churned butter and fresh biscuits. Younger visitors made corn husk dolls and played horseshoes.
The Historic Village is open several times a year, allowing for everyone to have their chance to look back on a piece of history.
