Ruthie McMichael, editor of Brewton-Parker College’s interdisciplinary journal The Oracle, plans to publish the next edition during the Spring Semester. J.J. Mincey worked as McMichael’s co-editor last semester but has since left the project. The Oracle is currently accepting submissions until February 5.
In previous editions, The Oracle featured writing from anyone who wished to submit their work. Now, the journal only features pieces from Brewton-Parker students, faculty, and alumni. As an interdisciplinary journal, The Oracle accepts all kinds of pieces including hymns, creative writing, science abstracts, and photography. McMichael shared, “The variety of pieces in the journal showcases that just because you think of writing as one specific thing, doesn’t mean that it really is. It’s a skill that you can develop in a lot of different ways and it’s important in general.”
The upcoming publication has a goal of being the biggest publication yet. Last semester, Mincey and McMicahel shared that they would eventually like to see a publication come out every semester rather than yearly. The broader goal that McMichael shared is for the Oracle to create more of an interest in fine arts across campus. “We do a great job of trying to get people involved in sports on campus, but we do have a very serious issue when it comes to fine arts. I think that this can draw in a lot of people to the school who are interested in fine arts,” shared McMichael.
Once the new edition of The Oracle is published, there will be a reading party at S’Moore Coffee Shop in Vidalia. Copies will be given for free to those who have contributed to the issue. Others will be able to purchase a copy for five dollars.
