Dr. Matt Harper, Assistant Professor of History and Africana Studies at Mercer University and author of The End of Days: African American Religion and Politics in the Age of Emancipation will be the guest speaker at the 2018 History Under the Stars. Harper will be delivering a talk entitled “The Hidden Lives of Jarrell Plantation.” He said: “It’s a talk about how researchers and students are uncovering the lives of the laborers at Jarrell Plantation Historic Site, a medium-sized plantation in middle Georgia, and changing the way we tell the public history of 19th-century farm life in Georgia.”
Brewton-Parker College hosts this event annually in the Historic Village on the main campus. It is organized by Dr. Amanda Allen, Assistant Professor of History at Brewton-Parker College. Allen said: “Through this annual event, Brewton-Parker’s History Department aims to bring area professors to benefit not only our student body, but also, the community at large. Having this event at BPC’s Historic Village helps to bring the lectures to life while highlighting the unique Montgomery/Toombs County history all around us. The Department of History hopes all, students and locals alike, will come experience a little bit of their past with this lecture, dinner, and village tours.”
This year’s lecture will be held on Wednesday, April 18 at 6:00pm. It will begin with dinner and a tour of the Historic Village buildings. Harper will speak after the conclusion of the tour.
