On Saturday, Oct. 27, Brewton-Parker College student Braden Stewart won the East Georgia College Chess Tournament. Stewart is just one player on BPC’s newest team that competes in a battle of the brains.
This tournament was the team’s first, and Stewart managed to win the competition with a 5-0 record. Additionally, BPC student Grace Mixon tied for the top score by a rated player (not in the top three).
Fifteen players competed in the tournament: three from Brewton-Parker College, two from Georgia Southern University, seven from East Georgia College, and three non-collegiate players from Vidalia Heritage Academy.
Dr. Grant Lilford, the Faculty Champion for the BPC Chess Association, stated, “I am immensely impressed that Brewton-Parker’s first tournament has met with such success. Chess is a highly competitive sport that demonstrates mental acuity and strategic thinking. This win implies a great future for chess at Brewton-Parker and shows our growing strength in admissions and academics.”
The BPC Chess Association meets each week to practice and is open to any interested persons. These practices provides an opportunity to play chess with players of varied abilities. Those interested in joining the association, can contact Dr. Lilford for more information by emailing glilford@bpc.edu.
