MOUNT VERNON—Brewton-Parker College hosted the first Veterans Day Band Concert on Tuesday, November 13 in the Gilder Recital Hall. The audience enjoyed musical pieces played by the ensemble, which featured BPC Wind Ensemble, Homeschool Band, Three Rivers Symphony Winds from Hazelhurst, and local school bands. They performed a variety of pieces ranging from “The Star Spangled Banner” to “Come thou Fount of Every Blessing.” During the performance, the audience took a moment to honor the Veterans in attendance, who delighted in the performance.
The inspiration for this event started when John Reed, the director of the Three Rivers Symphony Winds, contacted Matt Haley about putting together a Veterans Day program. The idea was to create a concert to include some of the smaller local bands and give them a chance to play in a larger ensemble, as well as a chance to perform with more mature players that perform in the BPC Wind Ensemble and Three Rivers Symphony Winds.
Matt Haley said, “I really enjoyed working with the Montgomery, Treutlen, Wheeler, and Robert Toombs Academy students. Their preparation and responsiveness is a testament to the efforts of their band directors. I’m glad that we were able to support our local music community and hope that we can make this a regular occurrence.”
Brewton-Parker looks forward to more concerts that embrace the school’s rich history of musical performance and celebrate the ongoing relationship with the local community.
