Ecology
Overview
If you enjoy being outside and exploring the world around you, are curious about plant, animal and even parasitic interactions, have great problem-solving skills, and want to make an impact on society, then a career in Ecology might be the perfect fit for you! Ecology is the study of interactions and relationships between organisms and their environment. In order to be good stewards of the land God has given us, we need to understand the current and historical relationships to the natural world and to each other. By choosing an Ecology degree from Brewton-Parker College, you will be given the opportunity to explore these relationships, uncover the complexities of our natural world, and discuss the environmental issues our society faces today. The only requirement is to have a curious, open mind and a respect for living things and their environments.
Our educational programs emphasize a multi-disciplinary perspective to understand life on Earth from organismal level to global processes that sustain humanity and all life. As an ecologist, you will be helping society make sound decisions and contributing significantly to our understanding and preservation of the natural world.
Through a BS in Biology with a concentration in Ecology at BPC, you will study under highly esteemed faculty members who are dedicated both in and out of the classroom. They will serve as your teachers, mentors, and fellow scholars while helping you develop the skills you need to solve environmental problems.
By the time you earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in Ecology from BPC, you will:
- Understand the form and function of invertebrate and vertebrate animals
- Have a foundational understanding of the symbiotic as well as parasitic relationships of organisms
- Be able to compare freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems with each other and understand their importance in the biosphere
- Have foundational knowledge of environmental, organic and biochemical chemistry in order to better distinguish between healthy and unhealthy ecosystems
- Have participated in well-designed laboratory experiences that develop your problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
