By earning your Bachelor of Arts in English at BPC, you will lay the foundation for a versatile career. As you study great works of literature, you will simultaneously cultivate writing and critical thinking skills as you develop a unique sensitivity to other peoples and cultures. These skills will further develop your creativity, which, coupled with proficiency in communication and writing, will set you apart from the crowd as you apply for jobs in a wide variety of disciplines.
Filtered through our commitment to a biblically-centered curriculum, your studies will maintain respect for the unique voices of others as you examine the realities of a fallen world and pursue Christian principles of redemption and reconciliation. With a minor in creative writing, you can further expand your creativity as you examine the social, philosophical, and moral themes that have shaped today’s society.
By the time you complete your Bachelor of Art in English, you will be able to:
- Develop mastery of the English language in all respects: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
- Read critically and with discernment, locating works of literature geographically, chronologically, and by genre. They will identify broader movements and traditions within British, American, and global literatures in English while maintaining respect for the unique voices of individual writers.
- Apply the liberal arts, literary theory, and philosophy of literature to read literature in light of other disciplines, recognizing both the value and limitations of these varied approaches.
- Locate language and literature within the Great Tradition, examining literature in light of its antecedents in the Bible and in classical literature and philosophy. Students will demonstrate a particular sensitivity to the moral value of literature, in documenting the realities of a fallen world, and in offering aspirations toward redemption and reconciliation.
